Tech KnowHow

Recently i purchased a mini PC from eglobal on aliexpress. The specification which i chose was

  • Intel i5 8'th generation processor
  • 8 gb ram
  • 128gb ssd m.2
  • Type c cable connectivity
Overall i was very satisfied with the product and it was serving my and my family member need well. But the disk space was something which was bothering. Everytime windows was complaining about low disk space error and i had to decide which application to delete. In the diwali festive season a lot of tempting offers were going on. I was constantly observing the space. I had kept two options.
  • Samsung 860 Evo 500GB
  • WD Blue 500GB SSD
Technology wise both were almost same. Both were having almost similar configuration. Samsung was 3D V-Nand and WD was 3D Nand. I had one spare sata III interface 6gb/s. Both were compatible with my mini PC. WD was coming out to be more economical for me as it was Rs 7999 vs Rs 9675 for the samsung. I went ahead and made the purchase. Amazon was quick to deliver it in a day. The next challenge was installing the SSD in my mini PC. I tries searching the internet for eglobal mini PC disassembly video or pages. But i didn't get any luck. I had to gather courage and try disassembling it myself without any video help. If anything goes wrong it would have been a loss of Rs 30000. Following were the steps that i followed.

  1. Remove the four rubber sticks at the bottom.
  2. Unscrew those four nuts which were under the rubber sticks.
  3. Pull out the below panel. You would be able to see the fan, RAM etc.
  4. Pull out the RAM. There would be a screw beneath the RAM, unscrew that.
  5. Remove the 3 nuts from the fan holder and remove the fan.
  6. Remove the 4 screws from the steel on which the fan was resting.
  7. Gently pull out the complete board. You might have to push the USB holes a bit so that it can be pulled out neatly.
  8. You would find the case where HDD or SSD can be inserted. First put the SSD in the sata port and then put it in the case.
  9. Place back all the components which were unscrewed and taken out.
Overall it had taken less than an hour for me to complete the process. Then i had restarted the computer and it was detecting the SSD properly. I used EaseUS todo back up free software version to copy the operating system and data to the new plugged in SSD. Then i changed the boot device to the new SSD and verified that everything is working. Finally i wiped out the data from the earlier SSD and installed ubuntu on the earlier disk :).
